DNC Ban on Ranked Choice Voting is Overturned

U.S. SENATOR ANKIT JAIN COMMENDS DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR REVERSING PROPOSED BAN ON RANKED CHOICE VOTING (Washington, DC) -- The Democratic National Committee (DNC) voted at its August 15th meeting to strip a proposed ban on ranked choice voting (RCV) from its 2028 presidential primary rules package. The original proposal would have overridden DC law by counting only voters' first-choice rankings and barring any future jurisdiction from using RCV in presidential primaries.

In response, U.S. Senator Ankit Jain (D-DC) issued the following statement:

"Today, the DNC did the right thing. At a time when DC is under relentless attack from Republicans in the federal government, it would have been unconscionable for our own party to join that assault on Home Rule. I want to thank the DNC and Chair Ken Martin for listening to DC residents and reversing the ranked choice voting ban. This episode makes one thing clear: ranked choice voting is here to stay in DC.

I worked to mobilize DC against the RCV ban and make it clear to the DNC how strongly DC opposed this effort. Then I worked with state parties around the country to fight back against the ban: ensuring the media covered the issue appropriately and personally whipping DNC members to vote against the ban. Thanks to our hard work, yet another attack on DC Home Rule has been defeated. It is still the case that not a single DC law has been nullified during the Trump presidency. I hope to keep it that way."
